Deepening Your Roots

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity” - James Clear, Atomic Habits

It’s probably no surprise to you that I’m a big fan of goal setting, which is one of the reasons we launched the Walden Roots: Discovering Your Financial Purpose process in the first place. When you are crystal clear on the life you want and the person you wish to become, we can help you to define the financial actions that will begin to add up to your new identity.

While it truly is that simple, it’s not easy. If we want to be something different in the future, then we must change our behavior now.

Therein lies the rub.

How often and in what detail do we talk to each other, or ourselves, about money as it relates to our goals? Establish a regular cadence THIS WEEK for thinking about, meeting, and talking about money as a vote for your new identity.

Is the way I spend money now reflective of who I am trying to become? Download the report from your credit card that categorizes your expenses THIS MONTH and take a step toward gaining an understanding of what your money is fueling.

Do I dread gathering and organizing all the data my accountant needs to do my taxes this year? Send an email to your accountant right now (go ahead, open another window as you’re reading this) and ask, “What one thing could I do with my data this year that would make it easier for you to prepare my taxes?”

As you set your financial goals for 2024, define the first action, no matter how small, that you will take in support of that goal. Every action creates a vote. This year, begin your campaign by voting for yourself.
